Remembrance services

Sunday 10th

Our Remembrance Sunday service this year was conducted by Julian Penfold and Margaret Cooke who led the congregation from Church across to the War Memorial just before 11.00am.

The wreaths were laid by two Morton ex-servicemen, John Farley and Ian Dickson, who were followed by Holy Cross Sunday School children bringing the poppies they had made to remember the people of Morton who had given their lives that we might have a better life.

The two minutes silence was absolute and this, followed by the last post, made us think of those whose names have become familiar to us over the years and it was heart warming to see such a large crowd of people paying their respects.

In Flanders fields the poppies grow
To mark the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place, and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
scarce heard amid the guns below.

Monday 11th

Morton Grange residents, relatives and staff turned out in force for a Service of Remembrance held in a packed lounge at the Home on the 11th November.

The Service was conducted by the Revd. John Epton, Curate of the United Benefice of Morton and Stonebroom with Shirland, with music provided by Alan Randle.

Everyone joined in, memories were valued, the names of those who had given their lives in the name of peace, or who had crossed the threshold of death on other occasions were read, the 2 minutes silence was observed, and it proved a valuable time of memorial and memory for the residents.

I would like to thank the staff at Morton Grange for promoting this new initiative and for inviting the church to make it possible.

Revd Margaret (Rector)
