Derbyshire County Council spent £14.9m on the state-of-the-art building which brings the 750-pupil school on to one site in Doe Hill Lane.

The new Tibshelf Community School includes a sports hall, library, specialist and general teaching area and offices.

It also includes a facility with sensory rooms to allow up to 15 students with autism to learn alongside their peers.

New playing fields, hard-surfaced games courts, athletics facilities and a full-size artificial football pitch have also been created.

County Councillor Kevin Gillott, Cabinet Member for Children and Younger Adults, said:

“Every child deserves an education that allows them to fulfil their full potential.

“We’re delighted that this new school provides young people with the surroundings to help them grow and learn.”

It brings to an end overcrowding and replaces a range of old and temporary buildings.

Headteacher Peter Crowe added: “Our children and staff have settled well in to the new school and I’m confident that the new bright, modern surroundings will help all our pupils thrive.”
