Keep warm, keep well this winter

Posted on November 08 2012

As the cold weather descends, Department of Health release the latest Keep Warm Keep Well leaflet for the public, especially the over 60’s, low income families and people with a disability or a long term health condition.

The leaflet is part of a national campaign which aims to protect people’s health and reduce harm from the severe cold weather.

In addition to this leaflet which is available in the useful documents section, the Met Office have started their cold weather alert service which runs until the end of March 2013.

The Met Office website is also the home of safety tips and advice during the cold winter, and other partners who can offer help and support through these colder months. The ‘Get ready for winter pages’ have information on safety when out and about and the Snow Code for clearing snow from pavements and Driveways, in order to prevent slips and falls.

Ever winter in the UK, between 25,000-30,000 deaths are linked to cold weather and there are more four million households in fuel poverty (when a household spends more than 10% of its income on keeping warm). More information on keeping warm and any grants available are on the NHS website.
